This brief highlights how people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) use self-directed services to achieve competitive integrated employment and greater community participation. Based on interviews with individuals, families, and support brokers, the study identifies strategies such as choosing trusted supporters, braiding funding sources, and customizing services to individual goals. Participants reported increased autonomy, stronger support networks, and improved quality of life, while also noting challenges like recruiting reliable staff.
